SAFE & SOUND BOXES
HISTORY OF THE BABY BOX
The tradition of the “Baby in a Box” began in Finland in the 1930s. At this time, Finland’s economy was going through a recession. There were a lot of families who could not afford to take care of their newborns, and at the time their government wasn’t providing any solutions. Due to these terrible conditions, the infant mortality rate grew to 6.5%. When the 1940s rolled around, Finland’s government made the commitment to give a “baby box” to every newborn’s family. Regardless of their income, each mother would receive the maternity box along with pre-natal care. These boxes included bodysuits, a sleeping bag, outdoor baby gear, safety bathing products, and a mattress with sheets. Within 15 years, the baby box movement gave Finland one of the lowest infancy death rates in the world (.34%).
The Newborn Bonding Boxes come beautifully designed with safety-first baby products. Each box comes with a domestically made mattress, along with two fitted sheets. Boxes can also come with baby safety supplies such as: diaper covers, breast pads, an infant first aid kit, and more! Our signature baby safety training is included in each box as well.
Many SIDS deaths are caused by everyday materials infants may come in contact with. Each mattress and sheet is made domestically, and has been certified by the Certri PUR-US laboratories. Each product is tested, and verified to exclude the following:
- PBDE flame retardants
- Prohibited phthalates
- Ozone depleters
- Mercury, lead or heavy metals
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why put a Baby in A Box?
For the past 75 years, Finland’s expectant mothers are given a box by the state. It contains a starter kit of clothes, sheets, and toys. Most importantly the box serves as a safer option to sleep in than a crib. This movement helped Finland achieve one of the world’s lowest infant mortality rates. It’s a tradition that dates back to the 1930s, and is designed to give every child in Finland an equal start to life. With the mattress in the bottom, the box becomes a baby’s first bed. Our favorite part is when the child has their first nap within the safety of the box.
Why should I purchase a Newborn Bonding Box for my next child?
We’ve provided training to parents who’ve already several children, and found they still find our information extremely beneficial. Our training purposefully correlates with the safety products in each box, other training courses don’t do the same.
What comes in a box?
With your order you will receive (1) Infant Box, (1) Foam mattress, (1) Mattress protector, (2) 100% Hospital-grade cotton fitted sheets and (1) safety hazard warning visual label. We have a product list you may order from that includes items for both the mom and baby. We strongly encourage breastfeeding, and offer a full line of products to create proper bonding between mom and baby.
Can I carry my infant around in the box?
NEVER!!! The box always needs to remain on a flat, solid surface, and should never be carried with your child inside.
Is shipping included on my order?
Shipping is an additional cost. We try and include freight costs with bulk wholesale orders.
How much weight can the newborn bonding boxes withstand?
Our boxes have been tested with a 200 lbs blast test.
Who created your training material?
Our educational material was designed by Healthcare professionals. We are also joined with many groups and outside organizations who review our material for accuracy and relevance.
How are parents using their Newborn Bonding Boxes?
It’s the perfect, and safest crib for infants in their first four months. The boxes are also great to keep all your Safe and Sound materials inside. Parents love to store memories of each kid’s childhood in these boxes; it’s very cool being able to look through memories of that child as they become young adults.
How to purchase Safe and Sound’s Boxes or Training Material?
Go to the Shop Now page to get your Bonding Box, and the training material that comes inside. Give us the necessary information and we’ll deliver these straight to your home.
Can we purchase the training material without the boxes?
Yes, you can purchase the training material alone. However, we strongly recommend combining use of the education along with the box for maximum benefits with our baby safety supplies.
What are the recommended ages/weights for use of the box?
We recommend discontinuing use of the box after 3-5 months, or until the infant becomes mobile or outgrows their box. Each baby is different and exact age limits are not always accurate. Parents should use good judgement in use of the boxes.
Can we design our own box?
Yes, but only for bulk orders. Customized boxes are typically only for healthcare organizations.
Do you offer refunds or exchanges?
We do not offer refunds unless something was damaged while shipping. However we are committed to quality, and frequently insure only the highest quality of products are shipped out. If you have a problem with a product, contact us and we’ll resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
What sets you apart from your competition?
We firmly believe that what sets us apart from other organizations is our commitment to safety. Our boxes are made of a very thick cardboard and have solid bottoms. Our mattresses are certified through independent laboratories (http://certipur.us/).
The greatest value we provide is neither the baby supplies or safer place to sleep, but the education parents receive. Our baby safety program provides healthcare professionals with the proper training tools to educate about SIDS prevention. The program consists of a sponsored class that parents attend before their child is born. These classes are fun and informative sessions where new parents can come together and celebrate, bond, and network with one another. Upon completion of the class, a short test will be administered by the healthcare provider. Parents will then be provided with their Newborn Bonding Box, and the training materials to take home.
As an organization, there are many possibilities on how to setup the training courses. With your purchase, we include several examples of real programs which have been successfully completed in the past. If you have issues getting parents to attend these classes, we offer free instruction on how to apply what we’ve learned in the Finnish Model as guidance. (One Hint: Offering the Newborn Baby Boxes at no charge to the parents. This is typically a very quick solution to growing your class attendance!) As a bonus, the programs were developed to overcome language barriers, so everyone can provide a safe environment for their child!
The S&S parenting program consists of the following:
- Hands-on participant workbooks to provide a place to apply what is learned.
- Pre, and Post-Class Quizzes to test what each parent has learned about keeping their newborn safe.
- Facilitator Notes to further explain how and why each practice is relevant the safety training.
- Take-Home handouts so parents have reminders and tips they can take home to continue their safe and sound experience.
